HOUSE OF SHAKIRA - HoS

Existing since 1991, the band from Sweden is back after 5 years of absence, and enough member changes. First, there's a new frontman, Andreas Novak, ex Mind's Eye singer, but also a new rhythm section. With these changes in mind, one might thing that their music could be different from their previous releases, but the band is back, stronger than ever, with an album that is 100% House Of Shakira. The band is playing Melodic Hard Rock, which ofter borrows enough AOR elements, making their music catchy enough, but also hiding enough details behind the surface for the cautious listener to explore. From the first listening you can understand that the music is a bit more rough than before, but without losing that catchy feeling the band always had in their songs, and this is a good thing. The new rhythm section, both the drummer, but the bass player as well, are doing a perfect job, and add to the creation of the heavier feeling in the music. The arrangements are very good, with no weak moments, and this multi-layered style, makes them more interesting and time resistant. Amongst the melodies, the perfect musicianship, the catchy choruses, and easy-to-participate parts, there's enough diversity something that is a big plus for the album in general. The production is crystal clear, and puts the final details to an already well worked album. This release is one of those that somehow stick into your mind, with music that should be performed live, but is equally enjoyable while driving, or at home. So, open your mind, sit back and relax, and let the music find it's way.

The story of the band sounds a bit like a fairytale, with various competition wins. And if you think that the band exists since 2008, you can understand why this is a major achievement for them. Battle Beast are from Finland and are playing Power Metal, blending the Teutonic rhythm section, with the excellent melodies that Finnish bands know how to create. The result is an album that is so catchy that sticks into your mind from the first minute, with pompous rhythms, nice refrains, parts to sing along, and plenty of groove to bang your head along. Being both oldfashioned at times, with back vocals that add some Epic feeling to the songs, but also with modern keyboard and guitar melodies that give a more shiny touch, and a complexity at times, which is welcome. The female vocalist is remarkable, managing to deliver either the high pitched or the lower parts, with the same ease and quality, and is maybe one of the big plus of this album. An equal good job has been done in every instrument, making this album sound like a veteran release rather than a debut. The songs are very good, a bit cliche at times, but with nice ideas, and very good musicianship, and are so catchy and well worked, that there are no weak points or things that seem incomplete. The production is clear and heavy enough, but without sacrificing the oldfashion feeling this album brings at times. If you count out some cliches, which by the way are well blended in to the music, this is a case of an album that sticks into a stereo, and stays there for some time. Remarkable vocals varying in range, excellent music, well worked arrangements, a tight rhythm section, and songs that stand high above the average. If you like your Power Metal groovy, epic, and catchy, then this is an album that you should listen to.

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS - Becoming

The Black Metal band from Phoenix - Arizona, presents us their new opus, and their music holds enough surprises for us to enjoy. First I have to say that this album is not an easy album, despite the fact that all the trademarks of a Black Metal release are present here. This is the first and stronger influence, where blastbeats, screaming vocals, and an ominous atmosphere is spread around the music. But the band has not limited their music to that, adding various elements in their songs, and giving often a doom and suffocating feeling to their music. Slow tempos, distorted guitars, nice melodies, and repetitive guitar riffs, create this feeling that is very welcome, and enriches the whole result. Acoustic parts dwell with blackened vocals, violins and cellos participating in this sonic feast, and the result is highly interesting at most of the times. The album consists on six songs, with two of them being just over 10 minutes in length, and one being 17 minutes. This might sound a bit tiring, but the band has managed to blend all those influences into songs that most of the times make you craving for more. The production is good enough, and points out all the details of the music, which are more than enough, and need some cautious listening to fully explore. It's really hard to say that this is a pure Black Metal album, although most of the times, it's moving on this path. But the addition of so many influences, and the blending with Doom has made their music much more intriguing. It's raw and aggressive, full of blastbeatings and atmospheric parts, with slow groovy riffs, and excellent musicianship. Check them out, but try to be as openminded as possible.

SHEAR - Breaking The Stillness

Shear are hailing from Finland, and this is their first full length, although the band consists on experienced musicians. The line up was completed in 2008, and since then they have released a four track EP back in 2009. It's an album that is well balanced between Metal and Rock, with female vocals, and music that might needs more than just a few spins, but has a lot to offer. First thing we noticed, is that the female vocals are not the typical ones, and this interesting if you think about it. Instead the singer sings in a more harsh way, changing her voice with each song, and fits with the music rather than dominating it. The influences of the band are many, varying from Classic Rock to Power Metal, and are all audible here, but this is not a bad thing, since the band has tried to create a personal style, and has succeeded in most of the songs. The band is talented, and this obvious not only from their performance but from their songwriting as well. Songs that move closer to Rock, others that are more Metal, and some with a touch of Symphonic on them, makes you think this album was written to please various fans. Besides the excellent vocals of Alexa Leroux, a magnificent work has also been done by the keyboards, which manage to create a very interesting atmosphere, add to the complexity of the music, and complete the melodies created by the guitars. An equal good work has also been done in the rhythm section. This album needs your full attention, in order to explore the music to it's best. Diverse and complex at times, more straightforward and easy listening at others, it's one of those debut albums that a band can be proud of.

ROB MANCINI - Rock N Roll Circus

This is the first solo album of Rob Mancini, and the artist is not only composed all the songs, has done most of the singing, except backing vocals, but also has played all the guitars and bass. The result is an album full of excellent music, a blend of Hard Rock with guitar driven AOR, and the artist is doing a very good work in all aspects. The first thing to notice here is the warm way of singing, something that fits perfectly with the feeling of the music, and the nature of the songs. Memorable parts, and easy refrains are widespread around the album, and help the listener participate, along with the plenty catchy moments and the well worked melodies. But being as experienced musician as he is, he also enriched his sound with enough harder moments, creating some equally fine Hard Rock songs. There are no weak points here, nor things indifferent, and even the cover of "Running Up That Hill" from Kate Bush has become an interesting version of the song. Melodic and well worked, with enough variety and plenty of nice ideas, this album has all it takes to please both fans of Melodic AOR and classic Hard Rock music. There are tons of melody, enough energy in the songs, great vocals, plenty of things to explore in the album. If you like your music melodic and catchy, then check this album.

GRAVEWORM - Fragments Of Death

This is the latest release of the Italian band, following their 2009 release "Diabolical Figures". The band plays a music that can be described as a Gothic meets Death Metal mixture, but with a dark feeling that is highly enjoyable. The music is groovy, raw and well performed, with a perfect atmosphere that is maybe one the most distinctive characteristics of the whole album. This is achieved mostly by the keyboards, but also from the guitar melodies, and gives an extra dimension to the music. But this is only to enhance the atmosphere of the songs, since the music is mostly closer to Death Metal, and to make it even more intriguing. The vocals of Stefan are excellent, brutal and growling enough, and fit perfectly with the music. Some clear vocals also exist, and are combined very good with the harsh ones, making the songs more fun to listen to. The songs are very good, with variety and well worked ideas, and I liked the way they move from mid tempo atmospheric parts to blast-beats and more extreme forms of performing. The production is excellent, heavy and as clear as should be, pointing out the atmosphere of the music, without sacrificing the energy of the album. With a tight rhythm section, nice ideas, brutal vocals, and an eerie feeling through the whole album, this release holds some diamonds ready to be discovered. Although the music is catchy enough, it still needs a couple of listenings to comprehend. If you are a fan of the band, also check this album, if you haven't already done so.

This is the first album of the American/Swedish band, and for sure will bring shivers to the spine of those that dig into that kind of music. The band is playing Hard Rock, catchy and memorable enough, the way it was played back in the mid 80's. The music is quite groovy, well played and composed and contains some nice ideas, that the band explores, along with enough cliches that the band manages to incorporate in their sound. The majority of the songs are good, all moving to the same up tempo cheerful style of music, with nice hooks, parts to sing along, a good and tight rhythm section, and the ideal vocals for this kind of music. Along with those songs are a few moments where a more Bluesy feeling comes to surface, spicing things a bit, and giving some more promises for the future. In the lineup we also find a formed football player, Mats Rubarth on bass guitar, and a female drummer, Josephine Forsman, both doing a very good job. A crystal clear production, that was done in the Polar Studios, comes to complete the album, and put the final details on this release. Songs ideal for driving, for having a few drinks with friends, and surely performed live at clubs. If you like the Rock n Roll feeling the bands used to have in the 80's, where everything seem a bit more straightforward and simple, then don't be afraid to check this band.

DYSCARNATE - And So It Came To Pass

This band comes from Essex, England, and this is their second release so far. The trio from England is playing very interesting Death Metal, sometimes closer to what American bands sound like, but also incorporating tons of European Death Metal elements as well. The result is catchy, often melodic, but always groovy, brutal and raw. The first thing to notice is the talent of the band, which manages to create music that is top notch. Either on fast blast-beatings, or mid-tempo head-banging parts, the rhythm section is there to deliver, and does that in the best possible way. The vocals are brutal, aggressive, well worked and fit perfectly with the style of the music. What impressed me at times, was the technical skills of the drummer, whose pounding way of performing gives an extra heaviness to the whole sound, specially on mid tempo parts. The band has also done a very good job in the arranging area, creating songs that are moving on a certain path, but are all interesting and enjoyable to listen to. Finally the production is modern and clear enough, but without sacrificing heaviness or energy. Technical and inspired, full of nice songs, and enough variety in the tempos, this album has all it takes to become a favorite. And judging from the quality of the songs, the band is promising a lot for the years to come. So if you are a fan of Death Metal, then do check those guys and plenty of hours of sonic assaulting are assured.

BASTARD PRIEST - Ghouls Of The Endless Night

The band exists since 2002 and hails from Sweden, assaulting our ears with their latest flesh ripping opus. Judging from the cover, one can predict what's expecting the listener here, and that is pure and primitive Death Metal, blended with enough Thrash Metal riffs and elements. Their music sounds raw and brutal from the first to the last minute, while the band has incorporated some melodies here and there, and this makes the result even more catchy and intriguing, but without sacrificing the aggression of the music. The vocals are not too brutal, but also not clear enough, and are moving between Death and Thrash, mostly closer to Death, sometimes ritualistic, others more growling, but always fitting perfectly with the music. What I liked most is the variety on this album, since not all songs are moving on the same tempo, and this keeps the listener interested until the end. The band is a duet, with the drummer handling also the vocals, and the other performing all strings, while some guest appearances are also working well for the album. It's primitive, sometimes more raw and old-fashioned than expected, with a production that gives an underground feeling to the music, but it's also full of energy, head-banging moments, enough aggression and good music. If you are into Death Metal stuff, give this guys a hearing, and decide.

SIGH - In Somniphobia

This is a very weird album indeed, one of those with music really hard to categorize, but very interesting to listen to. Sigh are hailing from Japan, and are playing Black Metal, although their sound is definitely not limited to the borders of the specific genre. Being talented as they are, they practically experiment with tons of influences, all blended into their music, creating music that is really hard to get into, but has a way to stick into your mind. Their melodies are plenty and well worked, and the variety of the songs is such that almost none of the songs is identical, although the majority of them are moving loosely on a common pattern. If you add female vocals, classic Hard Rock keyboards, saxophone and countless other elements from styles such as Classic music, or Jazz, that you wouldn't dream of making their way into a Black Metal album, you get some idea of what's expecting you. Except all these, there are tons of electronics, but also instruments such as sitar, tampura, tabla and sarangi, giving a more ethnic feeling, while preserving this annoying and nightmarish feeling that exists in some songs. What's more important is that the band is talented enough, and the songs are not sounding boring or indifferent, besides the numerous influences. Not the typical Black Metal album, but definitely an album so black and gloomy, that draws the attention. If you are a fan, or you are just an open-minded person, then give this album some time or cautious listening. You won't believe how much it has to offer.

PRIMAL FEAR - Unbreakable

The new brainchild of the German Power Metal will find it's way to the stores the 20th of January next year, and I am sure this is a release that all fans of the band are waiting with anxiety. The new album is moving on the same musical path the band has chosen to follow, and if you ask me, this is a good thing. The first thing to notice is the way Scheepers sings, and there no way not to like it. He manages to transform his vocal style to fit perfectly the music. There's diversity in the album, with songs that are closer to classic Heavy Metal, and others closer to more modern but always straightforward Power Metal, and singing is always fitting. The music has a power of it's own, and manages to creep into your brain, from the first minute of album, till the last note. What's more, the songs are not exactly moving on the same style, although their basic forms are very close, and have a way to travel you back in time, without sounding retro. The production is shinny and clear enough, but doesn't make the music sound fake or less powerful. With absolutely no weak points, lots of catchy moments, plenty of choruses and parts to sing along, superb vocals, and a variety that will please everyone, I think the new album of Primal Fear sets new standards in their work. Fans will enjoy this album, but also open-minded metalheads will recognize the ability of the band to create music that exceeds the limits they set.

NIGHTWISH - Imaginaerum

The announcement of a new release from Nightwish is always a great event. Especially now, because this is the second effort of the group without Tarja behind the microphone and they have to prove that they remain a pioneer band. The first thing I've noticed is the team working of the members. It's like a football team. When you lose your star player, you have to fill the gap with the other players and Nightwish do it successfully. Tuomas and Marco's talent is absolutely undisputed and they give space for participation to the final result to all band members. Musically you will find everything in this album. An ideal mixture of Power Metal with theatrical and folk(specially Celtic)themes, add some choral elements and you have a sample of great music. I'm warning you! This is not an easy listening release! Listen it several times if you want to discover the greatness of Nightwish music. Try it without fear!!!

JACK STARR'S BURNING STARR - Land Of The Dead

Jack Starr needs no particular recommendations as an artist. This is the seventh record attempt with the Burning Starr band and it has the smell of an old perfume. The years maybe pass by but the war feeling of the veteran warrior still burns! With the ex-Manowar drummer, Rhino by his side, Starr provide us an excellent sample of pure Epic Metal music. The atmosphere drive us back to the glorious 80’s epic years. The guitar work is amazing, sharp and melodic and the rhythm section is tough and steady because of the distinguished drum skills of Rhino. In these elements add the catchy and memorable refrains ideal for live concerts and that's it! Pure, simple, macho, epic! The old warrior still cries out for war! Can you hear the call?

SOULDRAINER - Heavens Gate

This is the second album of the band, following their debut which was released back in 2007. The music of the band is a pleasant surprise, since they are based on Death Metal, but they incorporate enough elements to make their sound unique and interesting. Basically the band is playing Melodic Death Metal, borrowing enough elements from Amon Amarth, Hypocrisy and the likes, but along with that, there are enough keyboard, and background vocals, something that gives their sound a more eerie feeling. The music is well performed, with killer melodies, a solid rhythm section, and brutal singing, and is catchy enough to make you move your head along with the rhythm. Ideas are plenty and well explored, and sometimes the combination of all those ingredients is creating songs that stand high above the average Death Metal stuff. The use of atmospheric keyboards, background vocals, and melodic parts here and there gives an extra depth to their music, and makes it sound even more intriguing. There's enough talent in the band, both in the composing and the performing area, and is obvious through the whole album, with no fillers or less good moments. The production is excellent, heavy and distorted enough, and preserves the details of the music. Heavy guitars and groovy riffs co-exist with melodic keyboards and haunting vocals blend with growls, to create a result that sometimes is amazing. If you like the genre, and you won't mind the experiment, check them out.

CORNERSTONE - Somewhere In America

This band comes from Austria and this is their latest full length release. Existing since the late 90's and surviving through numerous line up changes, the band has managed to create music, but never had the chance to release a full length until 2008. The band is a pleasant surprise, maybe not for strict Metal fans, but for sure for people who like good music in general. Blending a good dose of Rock and AOR, with touches from POP here and there, they manage to create an album that might not be the next opus in the music industry, but has it's good moments, and these are quite enough. While the music is well performed, melodic and touching at times, what really dominates the album is the female vocals of Patricia. She manages to sing in a way that is absolutely fitting with the music, enhancing the result, and making the songs even more interesting. The whole album is moving on the mellow side of Rock, ballads are super soft, still kinda interesting, but when the band decides to harden their sound, the result is also welcome, and shows that there's potential. The songs are quite good, with nice ideas, and perfect musicianship, and the clear production of the album helps them out in the best possible way. No matter if it's a style Metalheads don't like, you can't overlook the fact that the band puts their soul in their music, and this somehow reflects to the listener as well. So, open your mind, and give it a try. You might discover things you wouldn't imagine.

LVCIFYRE - The Calling Depths

This band comes from London, and they are playing a kind of Brutal Death Metal that will please all fans of the genre. This is the debut album of the band that exists since 2007, but they are all experienced musicians, and this is obvious from the way the band performs their songs. Despite the style of their music, the melodies are plenty, but not making the sound weaker, instead they give an extra dimension to it. Influences of Thrash exist here and there, and the distorted Possessed-like guitar solos and riffs will make fans grin a bit more. One of the most important thing in their music is the atmosphere, and there is a connection between the cover art, and the sick feeling that the band creates here. Narrations enrich the whole result, and give a more unholy touch to the music. The songs are top class, with enough style changes and perfect musicianship, killer melodies, growls that fit perfectly with the title of the album, and enough ideas that are well explored through the whole album. A clear production helps the music very much, but doesn't destroy the atmosphere of the music, or the brutality of the album. Talented and experienced, the band, managed to create music that combines both the brutality of Death Metal, with enough Black and Thrash influences here and there. Add to all these, the unholy atmosphere that is spread through the album, slowly poisoning the minds, and you get the whole idea. Sick, brutal, suffocating but we liked it. Check it out.

METALIAN - Rock Solid

As a huge Canadian Metal scene fan, I often find myself amazed by the quality and the unique sound of the bands that come from this part of the US Continent. Metalian is a trio from Quebec, and are playing Classic Heavy Metal, as close to classic as you can imagine, so you wouldn't tag their sound as "unique" but they surely have quality. Their sound is well worked and interesting, and although reminds a lot of the early 80's, has some personal elements as well. The album contains six songs, and all are moving to the same 80's feeling, with their influences of early Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, but also enough influences from NWOBHM being audible here and there. The band is quite talented, and the melodies are plenty yet old-fashioned, since no keyboards are used. The arrangements are good enough, and there are a couple of nice ideas explored, but the style of the music leaves little room for innovation. The production is quite good, also moving on the same feeling as the atmosphere of the music, as heavy as should be, and gives the final touch to the songs. Distorted guitars, screaming vocals, a solid rhythm section, Heavy Metal as it was played in the 80's, and obviously as it continues to be admired by millions of fans and bands worldwide. That's what you will find here, no less no more. If you liked that era of music, or you want to share the vision of the band, check them out. Only harry, since this album is out on a limited print.

IRON MASK - Black As Death

The mastermind behind Iron Mask is guitar virtuoso Dushan Petrossi and this is the newest release of the Belgian band, and their fourth in general. Iron Mask are playing Power Metal, enriched with enough symphonic elements, and some Epic stuff. The guitar melodies are taking the leading role on this album, with Dushan giving an excellent performance, slightly dominating the songs, but without becoming tiring or repetitive. Keyboards are also a vital part, and creating a perfect sonic carpet, for the rest of the instruments to evolve, and adding an extra dimension in music. What's more important here though, is the variety of the music, with songs having more Epic elements, others moving on more Classic forms, Hard Rock songs, and a ballad to finish the album. Vocals are also done by no less than Mark Boals, who needs no introduction, and manages with his skills to lift the whole album one level up. The arrangements are good, with enough variety in styles, plenty of nice ideas, that the talent of the band helps to explore to the maximum. Might be an album that aims for fans of Melodic Metal, Neoclassical, or Power Metal, but still, it's an album well composed, well performed, with killer melodies, and superb vocals, and with so few moments that could have been done in a different way, that no one will mind. If you are a fan of the band, or you like Melodic Metal in general, check this band.

ROYAL HUNT - Show Me How To Live

The new album of Royal Hunt brings everything back to it's natural position. This is the eleventh release of the Danish band, and this one brings back D.C. Cooper on vocals, something that will please all fans of the band. Royal Hunt are playing a music that is a mixture of Melodic stuff, Progressive, and Heavy Metal but also has a lot of Symphonic elements, something that gives an extra depth to the music. Right from the first minute, the long time fan, and even the occasional listener, will notice that this is an album that will stand the test of time. The songs are very good, varying on styles and tempos, with others moving closer to AOR forms, others being more catchy, with choruses and parts to sing along, but all bearing the excellent vocals of DC Cooper, who dominates the songs with his distinctive voice. The band is in a very creative period, and this is obvious from the compositions, which are all very good, with enough interesting ideas, and top class musicianship. Huge keyboard melodies, vocals that bring chills to your spine, melodic guitars and changes from AOR to Heavy Metal, with vocal choirs and catchy parts are the main characteristics of this album. One small objection about the length of the album, but I also prefer that, from endless intros and fillers here and there. Either being a devoted fan, or a newcomer to their music, this album is a must.

ILLNATH - Third Act In The Theatre Of Madness

Illnath is a band from Denmark, and this is their third album so far. The band exists since 1999 and started as a Symphonic Black band, but their sound evolved into more Death Metal forms. This was accomplished by the almost complete line up change, and by the replacement of the singer with a female vocalist. So, what we basically have here is a female fronted Death Metal band, and let me assure you that they are good at what they are playing. First of all the singer is very good, either on the growling part, or in the clear vocals that exist here and there and enhance the atmosphere of the album. The music is both melodic and groovy enough, and fits perfectly with the vocals, with enough keybords and plenty of twists. The majority of the songs are very good, with no moments where things are not interesting or less powerful. Although the few similarities of their sound with bands like Arch Enemy, the band has managed to create a more personal style, and those moments are not enough to spoil the good result. The arrangements are good, varying in style, with reminding their their early days, to more Melodic Death moments, and everything in between, and the band shows that doesn't afraid to explore their sound even more. The production is good enough, as raw and brutal as an album like this needs, but gives enough space for all the details of the music to come to surface. Not the most innovative release ever, but an honest album, with more than enough variety.

MIDNIGHT CHASER - Rough And Tough

I knew nothing about this band from Bay Area, and thought to give this album a spin, partially inspired by the old-school cover. But nothing prepared me for what was waiting, and this is something that I enjoyed most. The band is playing a mixture of Hard Rock and classic Heavy Metal, and their sound is so solid and well worked that sticks into your mind and makes you wanna bang along with the rhythm. The musicians are quite talented, and this is obvious not only from their performing but from their composing skills as well. A tight rhythm section, an excellent guitarist and a singer that has a quite distinctive but fitting voice, are all that it takes for them to create some killer tunes. Their influences vary, and include even New Wave of British Heavy Metal moments, but all are blended into their own style. The songs are very good, with enough interesting ideas, although they move on classic forms and their influences are sometimes more than obvious. Their music is ideal for performing live, listening with friends over a beer or two, and while driving. With songs that are catchy, with no weak points, well performed, and fun to listen to, this album is destined for success. With the cover, the feeling, and everything else screaming 80's, there are no modern elements into their music. For lovers of the era, for fans of good Metal music in general.

Rain is a band that exists since the early 80's and this is their latest release, which celebrates 30 years of activity. This is not exactly a new release though, since it contains songs from previous albums, but re-arranged and re-recorded, so the result is closer to what Rain sound today. Along with that, is the album opener, which is a brand new song. Rain are playing a melodic Hard Rock, in the vein of the 80's, with all the characteristics of the music of that era. The music of the band is catchy enough, and has a dirty feeling, with distorted guitars, harsh vocals, and a street attitude. The songs have been recorded live in the studio, with all the instruments, and this gives an extra credit for the band, and some extra heaviness to their sound. The production is very good, heavy and distorted enough, and the arrangements are quite good, and well worked. Catchy tunes, full of energy, with a rhythm that sometimes sticks into your mind and makes you head and feet move along with it, interesting vocals that fitting perfectly with the style of the music, and with a few weak points, this album is an interesting view to some of their old works. But gives also a good idea of their new material as well. Give it a spin and decide.

FERGIE FREDERIKSEN - Happiness Is The Road

Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen is well know for his vocals on TOTO but also for the participation in various albums and projects. The release of this album, his second solo, is finishing a very difficult period of time for the artist, who also found the strength to overcome his personal health problems. The music here is a guitar driven Melodic AOR, with songs that are full of emotions and excellent musicianship. The songs are well written, with the vocals dominating everything else, but with all the instruments doing a perfect job. Melodies are plenty and well used, either from the keyboards or the guitars, and are creating the perfect sonic carpet for the vocals to evolve. Frederiksen sounds at top shape, consider what he has been through, and gives a great performance through the whole album, coloring the songs with his distinctive voice. There's a very positive atmosphere, and this works very well for the listener too. The production is clear enough and was done by Dennis Ward who also has done the bass lines on this release. Great AOR melodies, excellent atmosphere, parts to sing along, nice catchy tunes, and a well known singer, are the key parts of this album. If you are into such stuff don't forget to check this album.

LORD VOLTURE - Never Cry Wolf

Lord Volture is a band that comes from The Netherlands and this is their second album so far. The band is playing Heavy Metal enriched with various elements, enough Power, some Thrash, here and there, to make things even more interesting and fun. This sometimes works, but there are few moments where things seem to lack some energy or that magic thing that binds everything together. This thankfully doesn't destroy much the whole result, just adds a couple of less good moments, so this is an area that some improvement could happen. The band is talented enough, and this is obvious from the composing, but mostly from the performing area. There are enough nice ideas, and the band has explored them in the best possible way, while they also have incorporated enough classic Metal stuff in their music. The band has also, just like in their previous release, invited a guest musician to sing on a track, with the guest being no less than Sean Peck of Cage. The production is very good, and adds the final touch to the album. There are some great songs, very good performance, skilled musicians, melodies, parts to sing along and parts to move along with the rhythm. Check them out, and decide for yourselves.

ANCIENT BARDS - Soulless Children

The new album of the Italian Melodic metal band, finds them continuing to perform music in the style of their debut album. The band exists since 2007 and this is their second album so far, and judging from their debut, one can see that their improvement is vast. Their music is more worked, their melodies are more catchy, and their songs are moving on higher quality levels. Performing Symphonic Power Metal, one needs to avoid cliche, or try to make them work in favor of their music, something that the band achieves with ease. Plenty of well worked melodies, excellent female vocals, complex keyboard lines, and a fast and solid rhythm section, all combined into a very welcome result. Being skilled musicians, they are able to realize their musical vision, with no weak points, or things that could have been done in a better way. The Epic atmosphere is strong, enriched by the choirs and keyboard melodies, and adds a lot to the whole result. But along with that the band doesn't afraid to flirt with some more complex and progressive forms in their songs, leading to the last track which is a 15 minute song. The production is crystal clear, the one should be expected from a release such as this, and puts the final details to the album. Maybe not the most original music ever, but the band has taken advantage of those similarities to shape a sound that is well performed, full of nice melodies, guitar shredding, catchy vocals, and interesting ideas. If you are one of those that liked their previous work, or you like Melodic Power, then hesitate no more, and check them out.

DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER - The Greatest Of The Best

What to say about those Germans, and how to explain their music to those that haven't heard any of their songs before? First we have to say that the band moves on various styles, and does it fluently, incorporating various influences into a very groovy and interesting mixture. There's Rock, there's Thrash, there's Folk, and everything in between, all mixed up in the cauldron of the band, and served in this album, for the daring and open minded to taste. The personality of Fuchs, the singer, dominates the music, but it also takes the performing skills of each band member to accomplish their musical vision. The songs are chosen very carefully, with no less good ones, and this is also a big plus for the compilation. Best of albums are ideal for fans that want to have a quick review of the work of a band, or want to see the progression of a band through each release. Nevertheless, this album is also a good release, even if you are a fan, since it contains plenty of favorite tunes all together. But let me tell you, if you are not familiar with their sound, open your mind, and expect everything. Cause their music is so full of twists and turns, that won't let you rest for a minute.

Ever wonder how things would have been for Thrash, if 90's never existed? Do you miss that old era, the sound and feel of the music of that time? So do we from time to time, and this album is one of those appropriate for that occasion. Vektor is a band that comes from Phoenix and exists since 2004. This is their second full length album, and I have the feeling that this will establish their name to the scene and make their music available to broader audiences. The band is playing Thrash, with all the characteristics of the style. There are the sharp guitar riffs, the screaming vocals which sometimes resemble much the style of Destruction, and the tight rhythm section, but on the other hand there's plenty of melody and complexity on the songs, that approaches the borders of Progressive. The band is talented enough, and they have enough interesting ideas explored through their music. Although the music is catchy enough with the first listening, the complexity of it's structure makes it even intriguing with each listening, revealing more and more. The production is excellent, clear enough to show every detail of the album, but also preserving the raw and old-fashioned feeling of the music. A highly anticipated album from those that have heard their debut, and a recommended listening for those into Thrash in general.

This is the new release of the Norwegian act, and this is their third album so far. Black Metal can be a bit diverse and unique style, with bands exploring new territories, while others prefer to stick to the same path, perfecting their sound with each release. This is what happens here, with the band playing an old-fashioned Black Metal music, with all the trademarks of the style, something that the fans of old school stuff will love. The music was recorded during three nights at the studio, with all the instruments and vocals recorded live, and this captures a lot of the feeling the band wanted to create. There are the fast blast-beating stuff that we all are aware of, but what enhances the dark and ominous atmosphere is the slower and more ritualistic moments, along with some additions from a church organ. In a tempo like that, vocals are chilling, and sound like coming from the depths of Hell, enriching the result to the maximum. The whole package screams old-fashioned, from the cover art, to the dark and suffocating production, everything is like the band decided to take a step back into the mid 90's. With the music being aggressive, dark, and poisonous, and moving into this sick and unholy atmosphere, success is guaranteed. If you are into Black Metal stuff, then this one will definitely meet your needs.

If you are not aware of the music of the band, then nothing can prepare you for that. Although not from the US, I can't overlook the fact that Country is a style of music with a huge and addictive groove in it. So, this band, is the brainchild of Al Jourgensen from Ministry, and is playing Country performed in his own perspective. The result is an album full of melodies, with lyrics having a strong sense of humor, talking about women, bikes, booze, bars and good time with friends. Along with the original Metal musicians, there are banjos, fiddles, cellos and mandolins, and this makes the music even more diverse and intriguing. So, what you have here can be tagged as a Country album performed through Metal filters, or a Metal album done by Country musicians, but no matter how you call it, it's well played. It has catchy grooves, very good melodies, harsh vocals, and gifted musicianship. Along with Al, there are musicians from Static-X, Cheap Trick, and Rigor Mortis, but equal good musicianship can also be heard from those playing banjos, fiddles and mandolins. The songs are very good, with no less good moments, or things that could be done in a better way. I understand that this album might not be enough Metal for the majority of the fans, and I guess it might not be enough Country for the fans of the genre. But to me, it sounds like a ambitious, inspired and humorous enough, effort to create an album that combines two different styles of music, into a style the band calls Countrycore. Check it out and decide for yourselves.

GOTTHARD - Homegrown - Live In Lugano

There's a special meaning to this live, since the singer no longer exists due to a terrible accident. The show was recorded at Lugano back at 2010, only a few months after the tragic death of the singer, and it's one of the shows with Steve Lee in vocals. So, this is not only a live release, but more of a homage to a very gifted singer who had much more to offer. For those not familiar with the music of Gotthard, the band is playing Hard Rock, with killer melodies, catchy vocals, the kind of music that is easy to get into, and fun to sing along. But don't get fooled, there's much more to the music than the surface, and the cautious listener will notice this after a few spins. This is obvious also from the way that the audience participates in each song, singing along, screaming and making their presence audible in every given chance. The singer communicates with the crowd, talking to people, and making sure they have a good time. Another strong point of the album is the sound quality, which is a big thing for a live album. The songs are clear enough, but there is also the noise of the crowd in the background, capturing some of the energy and the atmosphere of this live. Along with that, comes a bonus DVD containing amongst others, a live recorded back in 1999, named The Millennium Show 1999. Unfortunately the release marks the end of an era, but, it's still a live that both lucky Lugano fans, Gotthard fans, and good music lovers should check out.

MASTERCASTLE - Dangerous Diamonds

This is the third effort of the Italian band, and this album is one of those that can establish their brand name even stronger in the Metal scene. The band is playing Power Metal, enriched by many neoclassical elements and enough melodies. The first impression you get from this album is weird, because the music is moving on two different directions, dominated by both the guitars and the vocals. As strange as this might sound, both female singer and guitarist create a nice contradiction, making the songs even more catchy and fun to listen to. The guitarist is very skilled, creating some very complex melodies, either shredding or playing more melodic and slow stuff, while the rest of the rhythm section creates the perfect sonic base. On the other hand, the second pole of the album is the excellent vocals of Giorgia Gueglio, who also dominates the songs with her distinctive voice. So the result is an album that won't bore the listener with countless guitar works, but a complete album, that combines the shredding with great and diverse singing, a solid rhythm section and enough interesting song arrangements. There are no weak points here, although some moments do stand out of the crowd, and this is also because the singer manages with her versatile way of singing to color the songs with her own style. Either call it Power, Neoclassical, or just Metal, this album is well arranged, well performed, and contains enough very good songs. If you liked their previous two, then this is also recommended.

TERRORTORY - The Seed Left Behind

This band exists since 2000, and this is their debut album so far. All those years, the band had numerous line up changes and various demo recordings have been done, with material of them found their way into this album. The band is playing a mixture of Swedish Death, with enough elements from Thrash as well, something that might sound cliche, but it's so well constructed that no one will mind. The first thing we noticed is that the band is talented enough, with their musical vision perfectly realized here, and able to create music that can be catchy and groovy, but also complex and mind intriguing at the same time. There are contradictions in their music, aggressive parts give their place to melodic moments with clear vocals, catchy melodies enrich each song while brutal growls and crunchy guitars dwell in the foreground. Their music, although contains enough similarities with bands like In Flames or Dark Tranquility, also contains enough personal elements, and enough interesting ideas. The production is heavy and powerful enough, but also as clear as it should be. If you are seeking for an album that bears all the trademarks of the Swedish scene, and still doesn't afraid to explore some new territories, then you might be interested in this one. It's brutal, it's melodic, diverse, aggressive, and well played.

HARDCORE SUPERSTAR - The Party Ain't Over 'Til We Say So

Hardcore Superstar is a band that comes from Sweden, and despite their name states, they are not into any kind of Hardcore. The band exists for about a decade now, and this is a compilation of their best songs in their career, plus a new track, which was put as a first track, and trust me, it's the perfect opener. The band is playing music that is heavily inspired by the 80's, and the listener will find enough inspiration from bands like Gun's and Roses and mostly Motley Crue. Elements from Thrash can also be heard in their early work, and still are blended together in their latest songs, creating a style they call Street Metal, and enriching the whole result. This brings two words in mind, one being Energy, and the other being Party. The music is pure fun to listen to, while driving or while drinking beers with friends at a local bar. Melodies are plenty here, and make the songs catchy and groovy enough, while the vocals are fitting perfectly with the feeling of the music. The choice of songs is very good, and gives a good idea to the listener of what the sound of the band is like, from their first to their latest releases. A good and clear production, preserves both the atmosphere of the music and also brings all the details of the music to the surface. A Best Of is a quick lesson to the music of a band, and this lesson has all it takes to become successful. It's fast, groovy, catchy, well performed, full of power and sticks into your mind. Enjoy.

It takes a huge dose of egoism, big guts, or both, to put that title on your latest release. But is it as the Swedish bands claims, or it's just big words? First of all, the band plays a kind of Metal that has enough electronic sounds, plenty of Industrial elements and a rather Gothic style in singing which fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the music. The thing that impresses is the groove that the songs have, and the ease that the music sticks into your mind. The band has chosen songs from their latest three albums, a perfect sample of their 11 year old career, plus two brand new songs put in the very beginning of the album to tease the listener. The songs are wisely chosen, and are all of the same high quality. The production is also great, heavy and dark enough, and preserves the atmosphere of the music in the best possible way. The album has been released just in time for their tour with Rammstein, but still, it's a perfect crash course for those that want to get to know better the music of the band. As for the title, I am not sure if it contains the best songs on earth, but surely contains some of their best material so far. So, if you happen to live in a city where the two bands come to play, you can consider yourself lucky. Either way though, grab a copy of this release, sit back, and enjoy both the performance and the dark and emotional atmosphere.

Ukraine, as you have understand, and they play high quality, Power Metal blended with some modern elements. The result is outstanding! SANDSTONE - Cultural Dissonance

Sandstone is a band that hails from Ireland, and are playing a mixture of Progressive and Melodic Power Metal. This is their third album so far, following their latest 2009 work, titled "Purging The Past", which amongst others, received great comments from Bruce Dickinson. Now, the band is blending two almost similar styles of music, creating something that has the trademarks and the strong points of both genres. First of all is melodic, and catchy, something that makes the music easy to get into from the first listening. Parts memorable enough, easy to sing along and a groovy rhythm section, enhance this feeling, and make the songs even better. But, along with that, there's diversity and complexity into the song structures, and enough things hidden, that the listeners have to discover with each listening. The music is heavier than their previous work, due to the addition of a second guitar, and this is a certain step forward for the new album. Along with that, comes the vocals, which are also very good, well worked, and fitting perfectly with the music, either slow and melodic, or harder and more powerful. The production is very good, as clear as should be, and points out all the details of the music. If you seek an album that can combine the fast and melodic elements of Power Metal, with complexity of Progressive, into a mixture that has no weak points, then this is an album that you should check out. After all, coming from a country with a huge tradition in music, is somehow assuring the result.

This is the third release of the band, following their "Astronomy" album which was released about five years ago. The band from Sweden continued on the saga of Dragonland, a fantastic place that was realized in their first two albums. The first impression is that the band is playing Melodic Power Metal, fast and groovy, pompous and well written, the kind that fans love to sing along, since it's both catchy and easy to get into. But, under this skin, the band has created an album that borrows enough items from Symphonic music, from the roles that the vocals create, to the atmosphere of the whole music, and the theatrical parts that are spread around the album. According to the mastermind Olof Morck, the band wanted to create an album that would be inspired by every fantasy movie around, every RPG soundtrack, instead of creating another Power Metal cliche release. So, the album has this fantasy atmosphere, and sounds like a soundtrack to a perfect Epic movie. It takes you to places, it reminds you of movies you've seen, games you've played, and has such a marvelous atmosphere until the end. Technically, the band is perfect, and they are capable to support their musical vision, while the well worked vocals color the songs with various moods, and help in the creation of the Epic atmosphere. Melodies are plenty, created from both the keyboards and guitars, and are well worked and interesting. Even the intros here are important and welcome. An album amazing at it's entirety, with no weak points, a truly superb journey to the a fantastic land.

ABOMINATION - Abomination/Tragedy Strikes

Abomination was formed back in the 80's by Paul Speckmann, of Master and Krabathor fame. This release is not a new album, but their first two full length, one EP which was released in 1999, and some rare demos, all packed together into a very interesting offer. The band is playing a mixture of Death and Thrash, and bears all the trademarks of this style. The songs are quite good, all moving to the same speedy tempos, and the semi-brutal vocals are fitting perfectly with the music. What is intriguing though, is the variety that exists in some of the songs. But there's also a more groovy, less fast, but equally brutal sound, reaching the surface in more than just a couple of times. That somehow can be explained from the time spanning between the full length albums and the much later EP stuff. With distorted guitars, double base drums, fast solos, often reminding of the style of Possessed, tons of energy and an early Slayer feeling in the music, this album will please all fans of 80's Thrash, while their primitive Death Metal will also appeal to fans as well. If you are one of those that lived that era, or you want to have a package with all the stuff Abomination had released, then check this out. Some less good moments , might prevent it from being a perfect release, but the overall is very good. So, get a copy, put it on your favorite playing media, and get ready for some serious headbanging.

SIR REG - A Sign Of The Times

First of all I have to say that this is not a Metal album, although it contains enough distorted guitars. If you are a die hard Metal fan, then this might not appeal to you. But if you are openminded, then let's start. I am not sure why, but Folk music has a strange affection on me, and often enough I find myself turning back to Folk tunes that I like. Sir Reg is a band that comes from Sweden, with a singer that is Irish, and are playing a Rock music dominated by Celtic Folk. The result is a music that is both fun to listen to, and catchy enough. The most important thing here is the nature of the music. It's catchy and groovy, there's enough harder times, where the guitars are more heavy, enough parts to sing along, and you will often find yourself tapping the floor and moving your head along with the rhythm. Flutes, bouzouki, and violins, enhance the Folk feeling, and raise the fun to heavens. This is their second album so far, but the band exists and performs live since 2001. The production is great, heavy and powerful enough and preserves the pub atmosphere that the music creates. What I like on this one, is that the music has a way to transfer you to the nearest Irish pub, put you on the bar and serve you some beer for a start. Pure fun and up-tempo in every single minute, with excellent musicianship, and a distinctive Irish feeling, this album is a favorite. For Irish people around the globe, and for people who can appreciate good music. Cheers.

SICK OF IT ALL - Nonstop

This is not the latest album of the legendary Hardcore band, but a release aiming to celebrate their 25 years of existing. This is an album containing all the classics of the band, spanning through their entire history, recorded in the old fashioned way, only in four days. So it's more like a best of album, or, if you prefer, how classics of the past can sound in 2011. No matter if you are fan of the band or not, it's really hard not to be affected by the rhythm and the energy of their music, which is one of the strong points of their music. Right from the first song, the groove takes the leading role, and you find yourself banging your head along with it. The new version of the songs, if we can call it like this, is very close to the originals, keeping the same feeling but giving a more modern approach. According to Armand Majidi, there's a tempo change in most of them, some arrangements were remade, but they tried to keep them as close to the originals as possible. Working again under the direction of Tue Madsen, the production is powerful and clear enough, and completes the album in the way it deserves. No matter if you are an old fan of SOIA, or a new one that just now starts to explore their music, this album is a powerful addition to your collection. It's full of energy, groovy parts, tons of headbanging, a solid rhythm section, and vocals full of anger. What more could anyone ask from a band?

AS THEY BURN - Aeon's War

This band is coming from France and this is their second, if I am not mistaken, album so far, after a release of an EP. Their music is a weird mixture of various influences, all wrapped up into a very peculiar and intriguing style. They are playing a kind of Metal, full of melodies and groovy guitars, brutal vocals and tons of headbanging parts, very close to what Deathcore sounds like. Brutality and aggression are existing here in huge amounts, and this is the first impression of the listener. But if you read between the lines, there are various other influences from Black Metal to progressive and psychedelic twisting and trying to get to the surface. The music is moving on well known paths, but doesn't afraid to take advantage of every single opportunity to explore various territories, while the vocals are also moving from screaming and growling to clear ones, creating or enhancing the atmosphere the music creates. The guitars are great, some of the riffs here are super catchy and groovy, and so good is the rhythm section in general. I am not sure if I would be able to describe this music to someone, but what I know is that this album contains enough fresh ideas, and shows a band that doesn't know any borders. Add to this, their ability to support their vision technically, and you get the whole picture. Not an easy album, although it might sound like that from the first listening. It takes it's time to reveal it's secrets, and worth every minute of it.

BOGUSLAW BALCERAK'S CRYLORD - Blood Of The Prophets

The band here comes from Poland is the brainchild of Boguslaw Balcerak, a talented guitarist and this is their first release on Lion Music. The band is playing Neoclassical Metal, with all the trademarks of the genre, and are doing it with quite a style. The first concern for such a release, is that if the guitarist can implement some feeling and melodies along with the guitar shredding, thus making songs not only perfectly performed but also catchy and interesting for the listener. Such a question doesn't exist here, since all the things of this album are carefully chosen for the best result. First we have to say that Boguslaw can play, and can play good. Inspired by Malmsteen obviously, but also from Classic music, he tries to create a personal sound, adding all those influences into his own style. The material of this album was recorded from 2008 to 2009, and the vocals were done by Mark Boals, Goran Edman and Carsten Schulz adding to the whole quality. So, along with the excellent guitar works and melodies expect top class vocals, memorable parts to sing along, and a touch of Epic atmosphere. The vocals are balancing the domination of the guitars, something that is very good, and make the music a bit more interesting. The mastering was done by no else than Andy LaRocque, to assure that top quality has also achieved in this section as well. If you are a fan of this style, then check them out.

IRON SAVIOR - The Landing

Four years have passed since the release of Megatropolis, and the Germans are back with a release that will once again please all their fans. I have been a huge fan of the band since their early steps, and enjoyed the atmosphere their music had back then, so I was a bit curious of this album as well. It seems that Piet Sielck has not lost the touch of creating music that is catchy and powerful enough. The music is Power Metal, perfectly performed, full of nice melodies, a battering rhythm section, amazing drum works by Thomas Nack, great guitars, and the distinguished vocals of Piet Sielck. The songs are very good, blending Power Metal, with enough traditional Metal stuff, making this album a bit more heavy than their first works, but still containing the same trademarks of their music. The production, clear and heavy enough, is as shinny as should be, but also preserves the atmosphere of the music as well. What we liked more is the fact that the music is catchy from the first minute, and the band seems to have a good time while performing, something that you can feel while listening to this album. Based on well known materials, with enough new ideas, great musicianship, and equally good performance, this album will also become a favorite for the fans of the band, but also for those seeking a good Power Metal album.

BOBBY KIMBALL JIMI JAMISON - Kimball Jamison

These guys here need no introduction, since everyone is aware of who they are, and, most important, what they are capable of. This is the first time, these two join their skills into an album, and the result meets the expectations of the most demanding fan. The music is Melodic Rock, with crunchy guitars, nice ideas, perfect parts to sing along, and is definitely dominated by the superb vocals of the two singers. There is no single less good moment here, from the ballads, to the more groovy moments, and both Bobby and Jimi are giving a perfect performance, coloring the songs with their vocal melodies. But since two singers alone are not a guarantee for a good album, the song writing has been arranged by experts of the genre, and the production was done by Mat Sinner, who is also responsible for the bass guitar. Aiming for a more adult audience, where memories from the big hits of Toto and Survivor are still alive, but also for fans who can admire and appreciate well arranged and performed Melodic Rock, this album is destined for success. It has all the trademarks of both singers, fine and catchy music, crystal clear production, and a good variety of songs and styles for everyone. So if Melodic stuff is you favorite, get ready to be amazed.

NINE COVENS - On The Coming Of Darkness

Nine Covens is band that hails from UK, and the newsletter says that consists on former and current members of some of the most important extreme bands of the past decade. This shed no light to the origin or the capabilities of the members, but this album has nothing to do with light in general. The band is playing Black Metal, and does it in a very oldfashioned and bleak way. Vocals that come from deep under, sharp guitar riffs that create a bleak atmosphere, the necessary blastbeating and a sense of melody that bring shivers to the spine. To spice things up, there's enough Thrash and old school Death elements, well spread here and there, and this gives an extra variety to the whole album. Being anonymous or not, the talent is obvious, and the band has managed to create some very good songs, with enough melodic parts, clear vocals, interesting ideas, although they didn't avoid some repetitive moments that don't spoil the whole fun though. The production is as dark and ominous as this album, fitting perfectly with the mood and the atmosphere of the music. Black Metal with an attitude, from a band that doesn't hesitate to explore musical paths, although not far away from the main road. A promising debut.

LUCKY THIR13N - March Of The Young

This is the debut album of the Greek band that comes from Thessaloniki, and to be honest, I didn't expect to have such a great time listening to it, while driving at work, or while writing this review. The band is playing Hard Rock mostly, but with enough guts, and some very interesting and intriguing ideas. With influences starting from the 80's Metal scene but the cautious listener with also find some 90's stuff, the band has managed to marry all those into an extremely catchy, quite aggressive, and groovy music. Right from the first song, you can't help but tapping your feet along with the rhythm, sing along the choruses, and participate in any way possible. Well written music has a way to do that, and Lucky Thir13n compose and perform like veterans. And if you thing that they have found a motive and stick to it, think again, cause the band doesn't afraid to experiment with guest brutal vocals in one song, but also with a song that is Rap meets Hard Rock, with both male and female vocals. The production is excellent, crystal clear and completes the album in the best possible way. With great performance and songwriting, this is a killer debut album. So, open your mind, and prepare for a nostalgic trip to 80's and 90's with some surprises in between.

THREAT SIGNAL - Threat Signal

The band exists since 2003 and this is their third album so far. While starting to listen to it, the term Modern Death Metal caught my eye, and I was quite curious of what would follow. Hailing from Canada, is a plus for this band, as some of my favorite and most intriguing bands are from this country. So, the band is playing Death Metal, only they do it in a very unique and personal way, that leaves a good feeling at the end. Blending Thrash with brutality, growls and a very technical style of playing, the band creates music that is both unique and fun to listen to. With no less good moments, very interesting riffs, melodies that enrich the songs without sacrificing aggression, and vocals that vary from growling to clear ones, the music is catchy and addictive from the first minute. But, as the listening progresses, more and more of the hidden details come to surface, and this makes this album even better. The production is crystal clear but doesn't destroy the feeling of the music in any way. The variety in music is also a plus, with excellent musicianship and all their influences so well combined, that will leave satisfied even the most demanding fan. If you are out for Death Metal that has an attitude and an unique approach to music, then Threat Signal might be what you are looking for.

CIPHER SYSTEM - Communicate The Storms

The new release of the Swedish Death Metal act, comes almost seven years after their previous one, and finds the band progressed in every possible way. One might thing what more has the Swedish Death Metal scene has to offer, but this is a question put in the wrong direction. This album shows that innovation and fresh ideas do exist, and shows that a band with the skills to write good music, and realize their ideas, has a chance to create something truly amazing. Cipher System are no newcomers, and this is obvious from the first minute. Managing to create an album that dwells between brutality and melodies, with both being a vital part but not dominating each other, the listening of each song is pure fun. The combination of clear and brutal vocals, the excellent music carpet that the keyboards create, the drums that also great and the guitar melodies and riffs, all blend together in a wise way, creating songs that are not repetitive or boring. The production is perfect, shinny and clear enough, and the cover art was done by Seth Siro Anton. With parts to bang along with the rhythm, enough complexity into each song, no weak points or things that could have been done better, things seem promising for the band. And the fact that took them so long to release an album, shows that every aspect of it is worked to the slightest detail. Enjoy it loud!

LIVARKAHIL - Signs Of Decay

This is the second full length album from the French Death Metal quintet that exists since 2007. The band is playing Death Metal, brutal and in your face, with enough twists though, something that gives an extra potential to their music. The first thing we noticed is that their music combines various other influences, and this leaves a good feeling in the end. Being skilled musicians, they manage to incorporate influences from Black Metal, enough industrial elements here and there, enough melodies and a groovy feeling that creates catchy rhythms from the first to the last minute. The vocals are brutal and powerful enough, with a distinguished sound, the guitars are very good, and the rhythm section is simply perfect. The album is a concept talking about religion autocracy. The songs are well written, with enough interesting ideas, enough variety in their forms, and enough surprises to make this album very interesting. Not an average Death Metal release, it's well arranged from every aspect, carefully prepared from the band, doesn't follow any specific rules or paths, and will make all their fans happy. So, if you want to hear something brutal, aggressive and technical, complex but well performed and innovative enough, then give this a spin and you won't regret.

SINNER - One Bullet Left

With every Sinner album you know exactly what to expect, and this is nothing less that top class Metal. Starting from the first minute, the band shows that this album will become another milestone in their long career. With a distinguished sound, the listener knows what lies ahead, but the band still holds a couple of surprises carefully spread here and there. The music is a mixture of Power Metal with enough Classic stuff, and the addition of a third guitarist makes their sound more solid than before. The songs have enough melodies, parts to sing along, catchy choruses and are well worked and perfectly arranged. What's more enjoyable is the fact that there's some variety in the songs, some being closer to the Teutonic school, and others closer to more classic forms, but everything is well written, with nice ideas and even better musicianship. Add to all these, the clear and powerful production that was done by Mat Sinner, and you get the whole picture. The album smells fun from the beginning, shows that the band really enjoyed every minute of it, and this is also the feeling you get while listening to it. No matter how big or well known the band is, this album is honest, as much as their previous releases were, and this the big plus. So, sit back, get a couple of cold beers, some friends, and enjoy it really loud.

HOUSE OF LORDS - Big Money

The band was formed back in the late 80's and is active since then, except a hiatus taken the mid 90's to the dawn of the new century. The band, for those unfamiliar with their sound plays a mixture of Hard Rock enriched with tons of AOR elements, the kind of music meant to be played to big stadiums and venues. From the first listening the album shows that the band wants to create a sound back to their roots, and this attempt can be described as successful. Huge songs, full of the trademarks of the band, from the first to the last minute. Well written songs, full of nice melodies, excellent musicianship, parts to sing along, and memorable choruses. The vocals of James Christian are better than ever, the rhythm section is solid and tight, and the keyboards are simply excellent. The atmosphere of the album is pure 80's, and the help of long time friend Mark Baker helped in the creation of such a retro feeling. The production is great, crystal clear, and is a big plus for releases such as this. For a fan of this kind of music, an album full of such excellent songs, with the addition of a couple of killer radio friendly ballads, this album is a must have. And if you add the perfect performance of each of the band members, you get the whole picture.

SEBASTIAN BACH - Kicking & Screaming

Mostly known as a frontman of Skid Row, Sebastian Bach turned out to be a multi talented artist, who also checked his capabilities in acting as well. Following his debut solo album, Angel Down, which was released back in 2007, and changed record label to Frontiers Records, Mr Bach strikes back, or should I say, kicks and screams, with an album that will bring enough memories to the older of you. The first thing to notice are melodies, which are plenty, well arranged and used in every possible way to enhance the result. Another strong point, which was expected though, is that the album has the killer catchy songs that radio stations love to play, with parts to sing along, crunchy guitars and memorable rhythms. There are also ballads, maybe one too many for my taste but still well composed and performed. What's the most important thing here, is that almost every minute of it it's well worked, and the music combines all the good moments of his career but with a more modern approach. The production is as heavy as it should be for such an album, clear and powerful enough, and leaves space for all instruments to evolve. Music is still interesting with each listening, and grows on you, and this also another big plus for this record. If you are a fan of Melodic Hard Rock, then this is an album that you should check.

NIGHTRAGE - Insidious

Nightrage is a band that plays Melodic Death Metal, and has it's influences deep into the Gothenburg sound. This is their latest release, and like the previous one, the listener will find only the best of what Melodic Death has to offer. The album is based on two pillars, one is the complexity of the songs, that make it sound very close to Progressive at times, and the other is aggression. Both these things are combined in a very wise way, and you have songs that are both straightforward and melodic, but also have enough changes and hidden secrets waiting to be revealed. The guitar works performed by Marios Iliopoulos are excellent, full of melodic moments but also huge riffs, but so great are the other musicians as well. The vocals are very good too, and the singer not only can growl in the usual Death Metal way, but also can deliver equally good, when things slow down on some clear parts. Elements from various aggressive styles can also be found here, specially Thrash, which makes their sound even more catchy. The production is very good, and preserves all the details of their music. The guest appearances from Gus G, Apollo Papathanasio, Tomas Lindberg and Tom Englund, just to name a few, can only enhance the whole release, and give it an extra credit. If you are seeking for an album full of nice songs, melodic moments and tons of aggression then you will like the sound of the band. Give it a try and it won't disappoint you.

VADER - Welcome To The Morbid Reich

When someone things of the Polish Death Metal scene, one name comes in mind, and this is Vader. A band that exists for almost two decades, has seen various line up changes, but still continues to release works that are top notch, carefully prepared and wisely realized. This is also the case here, with their debut Nuclear Blast relase, and the devoted fan of their style of Death Metal, will accept it with a grin on his face. What is more enjoyable is that the band has created an album that is not only aggressive and brutal, but also groovy and catchy, with some nice melodies here and there, specially in the intros, and this enhances the feeling of each song. Another thing we liked is the plenty Thrash riffs and moments in the songs, that make this album even more catchy and fun to listen. Top class musicianship, excellent arrangements, and although there is not much variety in the song styles, the band manages to keep the listener interested until the end. The production is also very good, as clear and as powerful as it should be, without making the album sound too shinny. One might thing that there's no progression in their music, as time goes by, but Vader are having a very distinguished style in their music, which they only perfect with each release. So, if you are a fan of the band, or you like Death Metal in general, here's the best of what Poland has to offer. Enjoy.

BRAINSTORM - On The Spur Of The Moment

This is the new album of the German Power Metal band, and release by release, they show that they set new higher standards on their works. Of course the band is playing Power Metal, melodic and groovy enough, but there's enough variety here so that the listener will find enough things to keep his mind busy. And if you count also the dark atmosphere you have an album that stands high above the average. The songs are well written, with many interesting ideas and the band is exploring them to the best way possible. Andy B. Franck is giving the performance of his lifetime, but so are the other members of the band, pushing Brainstorm to a higher level. What's more amazing is that they manage to evovle with each record, and this is also happening here. Melodies are plenty and well implemented through the album, and enhance the whole result without sacrificing the atmosphere. The production is also excellent, heavy and clear enough and is another big plus for the album. The album is full of well written songs, nice melodic lines, excellent vocals and musicianship, the well known German rhythm section, all wrapped up into a shinny and powerful pack. If you are a fan of the band, then this is an album you must have. Until their next one.

ANTHRAX - Worship Music

I've always been a huge fan of this band, so this review might not be very objective, but then again, who said that reviews can't be a matter of personal taste? Anyway, I welcomed the fact that Joey Belladonna is back on the band, and this is their new album eight years after the release of their last studio effort. The new album sounds and feels as an Anthrax album should feel. It's full of classic moments and well written songs that will please all fans that were expecting this. Although they haven't forget the way to make crunchy thrashy music, this album is much more than this. Belladonna is in top shape, and so are the rest of band members, and the release is music that dives deep in to the depths of Classic Metal, but sounds as fresh and up-today as possible. Of course there are moments where the band is revisiting their late 80's era, which are also welcome and perfectly fitting. The production is top class, and completes the album in the best possible way. A new release from such a huge band, with almost the original line-up is a fact by itself. And if you consider also the quality of both the arrangements and their musical skills, you have another milestone on their career. One of those moments that the title couldn't be more fitting.

EDGUY - Age Of Joker

It has been quite some time since Tobias Sammet and his crew surprised us with the release of their debut album, and the controversy about their music still goes on. Having left their Melodic Power Metal days in the past, at least partially, the band has chosen to explore new territories in music, but always with the trademarks of the sound of Edguy. Things here are more diverse, starting from vocals of Tobias Sammet and continuing to each instrument and every minute of the music. But, if you thing that there are no parts to sing along, think again, since as I said before, some of the trademarks of the music are still here. There are the great vocals, the catchy parts, well written melodies, and the superb guitar solos one should expect from an Edguy album. But what I liked on this album, and many of the fans will also do, is that the band is not afraid to experiment and explore new directions in their music, and is doing it with the same quality and ease that did it with their early releases. The production is perfect and was done by Sascha Paeth, and completes the album in the best possible way. If you were eager for just another Power Metal album with each song being based on the same form, then you might get disappointed. The band shows that every influence can find it's way to their music, so country style guitars, Progressive elements, pianos, Heavy tracks, slow ballad-like ones, and songs with specific references to the 80's, everything is here, all blended and implemented into an album that has no weak point. So open your mind, and let these guys explain their vision of music.

COMMUNIC - The Bottom Deep

This is the fourth studio release of the Norwegian band, and I am sure that all fans of the band are already eager to reveal it's secrets. The band is playing a style of music that borrows elements from both Power Metal and Progressive, but combine them into a style than they can proudly call their own. First of all, this is not an easy album, although it contains moments that are catchy and straightforward. It will need more than just a listening or two to bring all the details of the music to the surface, and to explore the musical genius of it's creators. Whether slow and melodic, or more groovy and Heavy, everything is happening in a natural way, that will please even the listeners that Progressive is not their favorite style. The musicians are excellent, capable of delivering such a demanding task. A great work has also been done in the vocals, which cover a wide range and fit perfectly with the style of each song. The songs are well written, with no weak points, with a dark atmosphere spread around the album, and all the ideas that the band has, are explored to the maximum. A powerful production comes and completes the album in the way it deserves, and preserves all the details of the music. If you like Power Metal with a progressive touch, Sanctuary and Nevermore are amongst your favorite bands or you are a fan of Classic Heavy Metal, then this is a band you have to check out. Great work guys.

NIGHT IN GALES - Five Scars

What started as a promising band in the mid 90's, slowly faded away in the light of the new century, and the short hiatus the band took to explore it's musical horizons lasted about a decade. But they are back, with their fifth album so far, and their first, if I'm not mistaken in LifeForce Records. What the listener will find here, is a band playing Swedish Death Metal, with all it's pros and almost none of it's cons. There are tons of melodies, aggressive and clear vocals, crunchy guitar riffs, a solid rhythm section, and songs that are well written and catchy enough. There are enough Thrash elements in their music and this makes this album a bit more aggressive, something that is also welcome. The songs are well written, with a variety in influences that prevent them from becoming repetitive, with nice and well worked melodies, parts to bang your head and sing along, and with some interesting ideas that the band is trying to explore as much as possible. The production done by Dan Swano is great, not that we expected less from a man so familiar with the genre, and is another plus for the album. If you are a fan of the genre, a fan of the band, or both, then do check this album. With the majority of the songs standing much above the average, this release will establish the trademark NIG in the Metal map once again, and will open new opus in their career.

ABSU - Abzu

The Texan band exists since the late 80's, although starting from a different style of extreme Metal, and this is their latest release, following their highly successful self titled release of 2009. This time, there are not as many guest appearances as with their previous album but this doesn't affect the music at all. The band is playing Black Metal if you want to tag their music, but there are much more to it, that will please fans of other styles as well. First of all, their music contains huge amounts of Thrash, from the riffs to the tempo, and this is something very enjoyable. What is more important here, is that the music has a variety in styles that prevents the listener from having the feeling that it's repetitive or boring. There are melodies here and there, that enrich the whole result, the vocals vary from screaming high-pitched Black Metal to slower and more ritualistic forms, and the music in general seems to adopt various elements and explores new territories. This is more obvious on the last track of the album, which is a 15 minute tune, with the band showing their performing and composing skills. The production is very good, it's clear and powerful enough, but also preserves the mysterious atmosphere that the band has created with their music. The album is a journey from Black Metal blastbeating to Thrash headbanding and mysterious places of the earth, with the transition being made so natural that the listener will be amazed.

The story of this band starts back in 2007 in Sweden, and this is their first full length release so far. The band is playing Death Metal, but nothing close to what Swedish Metal sounds today. Instead imagine a mixture of old-fashioned Thrash music, with screaming vocals, that are a blend of Black and Death Metal, a very dark atmosphere and enough melodies here and there. The result is rather strange, raw and primitive, but addictive and catchy. I am not sure if they are experienced musicians or now trying to establish a sound of their own, but they have good things in their music, that fans of the extreme might like. Judging from the track titles, but also partially from the cover art, their song lyrics, or some of them, must have been inspired by the work of Lovecraft, something that I also find fitting with the atmosphere of the music. The production is quite good, clear enough, and manages to preserve the feeling. A band with potential, with enough good moments, enough nice ideas, and a very interesting approach in their music. If you put aside some less good moments, you have a raw album that gives them a promising future.

PATHOLOGY - Awaken To The Suffering

Pathology is a band that exists from 2006, and this is their fourth release so far and their second in Victory Records. The band is playing a Brutal mixture of Death Metal with enough Grind and some Thrash elements, something that will bring chills to the spine of the fans. Pathology not only manages to deliver their music but to showcase their performing skills as well. The rhythm section is tight as a rock, the drummer is great, either on slower parts, or when the band is accelerating, and the guitar solos are melodic, technical and complex enough. The vocals are the kind of growls one should expect from such a style, low pitched, like coming from the depths or from a grave, and fitting perfectly with the music. Whats amazing is their ability to create groovy songs, catchy and full of energy, with a variety of tempos, without becoming boring, or repetitive. There are even some melodies here and there, that create a nice contradiction with the blast-beats and the growling. A very good and clean production completes the album in the best possible way, and gives some extra credits to the whole result. It's brutal, aggressive, and feels like a kick in the stomach. Not for the weak.

WOLFPAKK - Wolfpakk

This is the first release of the collaboration of Mark Sweeney and Michael Voss. But this is more like a gathering of famous musicians since along with Voss/Sweeney in the vocals, there are numerous guest appearances by well respected artists. The result is an album full of Melodic Power Metal, fast and groovy the way Germans know how to create. But, there's also variety here, something that makes the album even more interesting. There are moments when things are more complex, with female vocals, and stronger keyboard melodies, there are the classic bombastic fast tempo songs, and there are songs with a more Epic feeling, ideal for performing live. The production is very good, as Heavy and as powerful as it should be, and helps the result very much. The album is maybe has a few cliche here and there, but it's so well performed, that the listener won't mind. There is also a 10 minute opus, Symphonic and catchy enough, that closes the album in the best possible way. An album full of great musicianship, with a lot of guest appearances, enough variety, catchy, groovy and with some nice ideas. If you like Power Metal in all it's varieties, then there's a lot of things to like here as well. It gave us some nice head banging moments on the road to work each morning. Check them out.

CONSORTIUM PROJECT V - Species

This band is the brainchild of Ian Parry, also famous for his work with Elegy, Ayreon and Vengeance amongst others, and celebrates over 25 years of career and 21 albums released so far. This is the last of the Consortium Project series, and is a release that won't disappoint any of the fans. The music here has a lot of different elements blended all together into a powerful and intriguing mixture. There's variety here, something that works for the album, and makes it even more enjoyable to the listeners. Some songs are closer to Power Metal, others have a more Progressive form, but all have mighty melodies, and excellent musicianship. If you followed the previous four releases, you will find that this time things are notably Heavier, something that Parry wanted to do on purpose, and so are the female vocals, which used to emphasize the result of the pentalogy. As with their previous releases, the guest musicians are top class, and couldn't be done otherwise, consisting the demanding style of music. The production is perfect, heavy and clear enough, and brings all the details of the album to the surface. Despite the fact that there are songs straightforward enough, the whole album needs cautious listening to explore all it's details. And with each listening, you will find even more things to like.

ELIAS VILJANEN - Taking The Lead

Shredding is a style of music that most people might find repetitive or boring, and can easily be so. Unless you are a guitar player, or a guitar wannabe player of course. Thankfully this is not the case here. This is not a new release, but a re-issue of Sonata Arctica's guitarist debut solo album which was released back in 2002. What makes this album interesting is that the listener will hear actual songs, and not just a constant solo of a talented guitarist. The songs are dominated by the excellent work of Elias Viljanen or course, but there's also room for the other instruments to evolve, and the result in working on both ways. The guitarist can express himself, but also the rest of the band is a vital part of the album. There are slow and faster parts, and there are enough things to like on this one. Melodies, either guitar driver, or from keyboards, are plenty and perfectly worked with absolute no indifferent moments. You don't have to be a guitar player, or a student to appreciate the music here, and this is the beauty of this album. If you haven't heard it all those years, then it's your chance to get it again enriched with a DVD as well.

SENCELLED - Senselled

I've always a good opinion for music that has a positive vibe, and this Swedish band is a perfect example of such a melody driven band. Their music gives you a happy feeling, that works very well, from the first to the last minute of the album. The band is playing a very radio friendly kind of Rock, melodic and catchy, with the elements of 90's rock and AOR, being the most obvious ones. The music is well written, with enough interesting parts, and what's the most important is that it's catchy and has a way to sneak into your mind. So, there's no surprise that after a few moments, you will find yourself singing along, and moving your head along with the groove. But don't get fooled, cause these guys not only know how to play, and also know how to compose. There are moments like the ballad "Oh Sarah" where the melodies strongly remind the kind of ballads Hard Rock bands used to create back in the late 80's, but given in a more modern perspective. The album has no weak points, and if you are a fan of Melodic music, this one will please you enough. If you like to sing along, tap you steering wheel while driving, and seeking for a band to give you a good mood while going to work, seek no more. Senselled are great for the job, and tested for a while from our crew.

It contains 4 new tracks, 4 classic songs re-recorded, 14 live songs that were recorded at Brno Cz, and a DVD, which was not contained in the promo-pack but contains footage of live performances, fan-filmed material, videos and more. What's amazing with this band is their skill to create songs that are so catchy and groovy that even the most negative and narrow-minded metal-heads can't help but moving with the rhythm. The vocals are aggressive and powerful enough, there are enough melodies here and there, and along with the solid rhythm section creates a style that is ideal for watching live. On this release, we also have a chance to witness the energy and the feeling of their live shows, and the reaction of the Czech audience in every given chance. Maybe not as valuable as a regular release, but if you are a fan of the band, or were on one of their live performances and want to live back the feeling, then check it out. Either way, their music is so fun to listen, that will keep you good company for quite some time.

LOCKUP - Necropolis Transparent

This is the third album of the Grindcore super band, about nine years after their latest release. The band has suffered the loss of Jesse Pintado, but seems to be back as strong and as brutal as ever. The album starts like a punch in the teeth and doesn't stop until it leaves you bleeding on the floor. It consists on 40 minutes of pure energy and aggression, but also skilled musicianship and performance. The drum works done by Nickolas Barker are amazing, the vocals of Tomas Lindberg are as excellent as they were on their previous work, the guitars and the rhythm section are also very good, and the guest appearances of Peter Tagtgren, and Jeff Walker can only spice things even more. The mixing of Andy Sneap gives an extra perspective to the whole music, and is another strong point of the album. Unlike many of the releases of this style, there are no weak points here, or moments that the music sounds indifferent or repetitive. The music is intense, brutal and aggressive, but also catchy and groovy enough, to stick to your mind. If Grindcore is your favorite style of music, and you liked their previous works, then get ready for a blast. Cause this time, Lock Up are back and they are back for good. Not for the weak.

This is the first release of the Italian quintet, that exists as a band since 2010. According to the newsletter, the band is playing Hard Rock, and they are quite good at it. Their music is a mixture of Hard Rock, with enough 70's elements, nice melodies, catchy moments, parts to sing along, and move your head with the rhythm. The band is talented enough and their songs are catchy, with some nice ideas, that they explored as much as possible. The production is clear enough, giving a modern perspective to their somehow old fashioned music mix, and is another plus for the album. The most important thing though, besides good musicianship is the vibe of the music on this album. Everyone knows that this kind of Rock has to be fun, and this is also the case here. This album is fun, uplifting, and makes you have a great time. It's one of those albums that is an ideal companion when driving, or having some beers with friends at a bar. No matter if this is their first full length, the band has managed to create an album that serves it's purpose, and for that it can be described as a successful one. Judging from the nature of the music though, a live performance would also be interesting. If Hard Rock is your game, you might consider checking Voodoo Highway's view.

HACKNEYED - Carnival Cadavre

The release of these German band is their third so far, and their first in their new label Lifeforce Records. They started back in 2006 being a band of young metalheads, but don't get fooled by the young of their age. They are good at what they do, and this album is fun to listen to from the first to the last minute. The band is playing Death Metal, enriched with tons of Thrash guitar works, and as you can imagine, this can only make things better. Starting from the first song, what catches the attention is the groove they have into their music. The band is quite talented, and this is obvious not only on their performing but also in their songwriting skills. They created songs that are catchy, with nice basic melodies here and there, enough energy, and a good production. The rhythm section is very good, specially the drummer, but a very nice job has also been done by the female bassist. They might be young, but have the talent, the ideas, and the will, to create music that will torture your necks for quite some time. If you like Death Metal and you fancy the Teutonic rhythm section that bands from Germany have, then this is an album that you should check. They are not inventing the wheel, but their version works exactly as it's supposed to.

DECAPITATED - Carnival Is Forever

Poland has a long history in Death Metal, and this band is a big part of it. Their story started when they assaulted the ears of an unsuspecting audience back in the late 90's and could be the dream of every young Metal fan. But the band proved that their success was not a favor of luck, but the result of hard work, musical studies and inspiration. The band is playing Death Metal, with a lot of changes into each song, something that makes each tune a very interesting surprise. The band is technical enough, something that helps the music very much, and prevents it from becoming repetitive. The songs are quite good, and there are equal amounts of brutality, Thrash riffs, melodies, and aggression, all blended wisely into a powerful mixture. The music is catchy enough, and has a groove that makes you move you head along with it, in no time. The production is perfect, as heavy as should be, polished enough, but not destroying the energy of their music. Maybe there was a strong line up change, due to the car accident that stopped the life of Vogg's brother, and put the band in a hiatus, but now it seems that the band is back, as strong as ever, with enough nice ideas, and some of the most innovative Death Metal. If you are a fan of Death Metal, check these guys out. Their credits are good, and this new release is just another proof of it.

A band that comes from Bergen, Norway, has enough hype to make the listener wondering what to expect. I mean, other than brutality and aggression. The trio here exists for about 4 years now, and this is their second full length album so far. Right from the first song, the listener can't help but notice the wise mixture of the above mentioned aggression, with various melodic elements, something that makes their music a bit more catchy, without sacrificing power and brutality. Their music is a mixture of Black and Thrash, all blended into a high octane cocktail. The songs are very good, with very few less good moments, with a groovy feeling that helps them stick into your mind, with some melodies here and there to spice things up and an excellent musicianship. The band is quite talented, and this is obvious from their performance, but a special mention needs to be done for the drummer, who is absolutely perfect. It was really hard not to bang my head along with the rhythm, and I have to add this to the pros of this album. So, if you are into this kind of stuff, then get your hands on this album, and torture the neighbors while listen to it.

SEPULTURA - Kairos

Sepultura is a band that has seen enough debate around their name, mostly because of their music directions followed by the departure of Max Cavalera. Nevertheless, after numerous releases, and touring, the band strikes back with their first album in Nuclear Blast. I was quite skeptical, mostly because I was not aware of their previous works, but soon my fears had gone away. Or so I thought. The album starts with a punch in the face, and some straightforward Thrash comes out of the speakers. The band delivers what you expect, and we, the listeners, continue to rub our hands with anticipation of what's to come. And in general, what comes was not that bad, it's brutal, groovy, and makes you move your head along with the rhythm. But, there are a few moments where things go out of hand, or simply the band wants to experiment, but the result doesn't seem so fitting. The production is excellent, heavy and clear enough, and helps the music very much. Very good musicianship, equally good performance, including Derrik Green, who sings in various ways, and does it in a very good way. What we liked, is that the performance and songwriting reminds sometimes of the old days. Edgy riffs, groovy sounds and killer rhythm section. We liked songs like MASK or SPECTRUM. What we don't like are the 30 second fillers, and the moments that sound a bit out of place. Get a chance to listen to this album, and participate in the debate that will follow.

DOMINANZ - As I Shine

Dominanz are hailing from Norway, a land with tradition in extremity in it's music styles. Therefor this band could be no exception, only they have enriched their sound even more. Basically the band members come from the Black Metal scene, and this is obvious in the way of singing, but also in the style of music. But, adding some atmospheric and Gothic stuff, along with various industrial elements here and there, they created an album that moves in more than just a dimension. The music is aggressive and groovy, and creates a very sick atmosphere that fans will love. The songs are very good, with interesting ideas, and there are no weak or boring parts that might spoil the fun. The use of background female vocals makes things even more catchy. The musicianship is excellent, and the band manages to blend all their influences in a wise way, from the first to the last minute. The production is also very good, clear and powerful enough, and preserves the atmosphere of the whole album in a perfect way. If you like experimenting, and the idea of blending various styles seems intriguing enough, then don't be afraid to explore their world. It's sick, suffocating, bleak and ominous, but definitely worth it.

NIGHT RANGER - Somewhere In California

I am sure that everyone is aware of who Night Ranger are. The release of this album also celebrates their 30th year as a band, and for sure will bring chills to the fans. Night Ranger are playing Melodic AOR with a modern costume, but with the same 80's feeling that fans loved. Fast and melodic songs, with excellent musicianship, and some amazing guitar works by brad Gillis. Melodies are vital and plenty, given by both guitars and keyboards, and and make the music even more catchy. The songwriting is amazing, something that Jack Blades is also known for, and the music although has an 100% 80's feeling, has also enough interesting ideas into it. Songs that ideal to sing along, with plenty of memorable choirs and refrains, this album smells fun and good time. For the fans who lived the 80's it's a, more shinny, journey to the past, and for the others it's a good melodic album, that will give hours of listening pleasure. So, load the album on your stereo, grab some beers, sit back, and prepare to be transported Somewhere in California.

Sometimes it's really hard to get amazed by a new release, or even surprised by what you listen. With so many releases, a band has to be really creative and have a interesting vision, to create something unique. This British band is one of those cases, at least their vision of music seems promising. They are trying to combine extreme music with orchestral parts, that often enough resemble of a metalized soundtrack. First of all, every single member of the band is very technical, and this is very good for the nature of their music. Second they have enough good ideas, and they are trying to explore them to the maximum. And last, but not least, the production of this album is clear enough and preserves the theatrical feeling the band wants to give to their music. Their work is rather difficult to tag, imagine something like Death Metal with a film score in the background, melodic, complex and groovy, aggressive and technical. Too damn difficult, but who really cares? Not an album for anyone, but if you are open minded, and listen carefully, more than just a couple of times, then there are plenty of things to discover.
